The guy said that if they gave me much more money my salary would be higher than any of the co-founders, It's literally just 3 guys (the co-founders) and a few sales associates, and they didn't even fly me out for the "onsite." I had a conversation with each of the cofounders and told them all exactly what my experience was, including the fact that I'm a new grad, and I still passed every single round. As a result, I would like to propose a $1,500 sign on bonus in order to cover this expense and prevent myself from incurring any financial loss during this period. By using our Services or clicking I agree, you agree to our use of cookies. I called the supervising manager the next day and requested a higher salary, given my extensive experience and the requirements of the position. She said she would forward my request to the Director, and she even called me later that day to say she "made a good case" to HR and that we'd see what came back. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. Obviously, this band may not always be appropriate for the individual who's applying and who could ostensibly add more value, but regardless, there is still a band because it's easier to enforce a pay band than it is to craft and administer a 'case by case' policy that usually results in wide variations in pay between various individuals with the same job title. Using tricks like you mention to bring in a person might have some short terms advantages, but in the long run it does more damage than it's worth. Last week I was offered a communications job at a small college in a big city. When rescinding an offer, it is always best to discuss the reasons with your human resources department, if possible, or get another professional opinion. For what it's worth, it sounds like you dodged a bullet with this particular company anyways. Keep in mind my ask was not extreme, it was literally for $2 more an hour. I am extremely critical of our current asinine regulatory structure (or lack thereof) in regards to working conditions. In exchange for these concessions, I plan to fully embrace the Account Service Coordinator role, preparing myself to obtain my Agent's license, and helping lead [REDACTED] to success in it's growth and reputation in the marketplace. Hi reddit! TL;DR: you tried to become an Engineering lead as a fresh new grad, company gave you offer, then realized their mistake, I wouldn't consider this as "offer rescinded", this is "an offer that should never have been given to you", Quoting an earlier comment: I think they were very aware of my experience level from the first moment they reached out to me. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast, More posts from the cscareerquestions community. I found out in our last conversation that they're actually pre-seed meaning they've been unable to raise in the last year that they've been out of their accelerator. I called them and inquired about the growth of the role to see if maybe I would be able to get a promotion of some sort to account for the lower salary early on. Regarding the "written offer", it doesn't have much meaning when you're trying to change the written offer. I am very pleased to learn [REDACTED] offers very low cost health insurance to all employees. ), I'm a new grad looking for my first real job, I interviewed for a Lead Software Engineer role at a very early stage startup that promised a high salary, they probably caught on that they might have hired someone who did not match their required experience level, Yup, I would strongly agree ... why would you hire a new grad for lead role? Got an offer low-balling my wage expectations, so I waited a day or two to see if a better offer came in from other places where I had interviewed (two of them did come in). The only cases where I've scored a signing bonus as part of an offer were if there was a bonus or equity I was giving up by accepting the offer, or as a sweetener/consolation prize where they wouldn't match my expectations on base pay or core benefits (especially if I have another offer). 3 Employers cannot withdraw an offer for discriminatory reasons, such as race, religion, sexual orientation, age, or gender. Strangely the offer was 25% less than the lowest end of the salary range listed on their angellist. So it's not obvious to me what about my experience was not apparent earlier in the process. While there may be exceptions, this isn’t normal practice. Maybe I'm being overly respectful of them/paranoid. I'd like to think the hiring manager would see that rescinding the offer was an overreaction, and correct it. For example, I recruit international candidates. Yuuuppp. level 2
what was the salary? Yeah that's sort of what I'm thinking too.
I interviewed for a Lead Software Engineer role at a very early stage startup that promised a high salary rivaling that of a Big N company. Sounds like you dodged a bullet. I thought it would be perfectly reasonable to ask for a salary in the range they had posted (and was even willing to take a bit less than that) especially considering that this job would likely require 60+ hour work weeks. Other places I've had offers from usually wait 3 or 4 days before following up to ask if I had made a decision. This subreddit is for all of those recruiters and candidates who really don't get it. It was not too bad of a salary by any means but I was confused and wanted to ask for more since this role would require a lot of hours among other things. TL;DR: Offered a job, tried to negotiate $2 more/hour, didn't talk to HR Assistant she rescinds offer. Also, during my conversation with this cofounder of this company, I found out that the lead engineer role would never involve any actual leadership or management as I would be the only engineer and they weren't looking to add many more engineers anytime soon. It is obvious whoever is in charge of the hiring is looking for any excuse to under pay and over work their employees. Saw after your clarification - they're broke. I ran into a similar situation a few years ago. If I said it you could probably search "lead software engineer" on angellist and filter for that specific salary range and find the company pretty quick. I didn't think OP asked for too much at all. Or is the HR Assistant on a crazy ego-trip. These don't sound like the kind of people you want to work for. However, I understand I cannot enroll in the health insurance plan until after I have been employed for 90 days. That being said, a low-paying job is better than no job. My resume clearly states my graduation date and my impressive though somewhat limited experience. Forward the email to the manager and the director. My recommendation is that you take the high road on this and not say or do anything that would make you look anything less than professional.
A subreddit for those with questions about working in the tech industry or in a computer-science-related job. They were looking for their first technical hire outside of the co-founders, and it seemed like a great opportunity to get in close to the ground floor at an early stage startup with a role that could grow into management over the years. I live in one of the most expensive cities in North America and the salary they offered for a mid-level job, well, let's just say the local liquor store pays more. Also during my initial interview (I had two), the supervising manager told me she knew the salary was low, wanted her employees to be compensated fairly and asked me what I would be comfortable with. Less than a day is far too short for a job offer response, but I doubt they were trying to manipulate her. If they are willing to rescind an offer over minor negotiation you can say goodbye to getting good raises and performance reviews. If you want to leave a job off your resume and application, you can. Offer Rescinded after Negotiation Attempt. Yeah as much as this probably sucks right now it will definitely be a good thing in the long run.
I'm a human volunteer content transcriber for Reddit and you could be too! I did not mean any offense by my previous email. They don't last! Being a lead dev means that you have lots of technical experience. It has been a pleasure meeting you, I feel it is in both of our best interest to rescind the offer at this time. Offer Rescinded after Negotiation Attempt.
In order to cover the gap between being insured through my current employer and reaching 90 days at [REDACTED], I will need to elect COBRA. Sounds like the startup had no idea what they were doing (Hiring a new grad with no prior experience as a lead). Huge red glaring spinning warning lights. Sounds like a take it or leave it offer. As someone who previously worked for six years at a startup that hired their CTO right out of college: It doesn't lead to a great engineering culture, I'll tell you that much. I was therefore understandably more comfortable speaking with her about salary since she brought it up in the first place. Also OP, I would recommend looking at bigger companies for your first job.
