All individuals appeared to be approximately 100–300 m apart from the next closest, and it was during these encounters that one of the briefly associating pairs was observed, in addition to breaching behaviour. They had previously been mistaken for Bryde’s whales as both species look similar, are small, and live in tropical seas. These aggregations are usually stable and remain in the same place for a few hours, sometimes as a result of whales feeding on the same patch of prey; at other times perhaps because a few whales engaged are in reproductive display.
